You Have a Right to be Safe
You can file for an Order of Protection against the person who is abusing you:
Filing an Order:
- You do not need an attorney
- You do not have to pay a filing fee
- You do need an address where you abuser can be served
- You must be 18 years of age or older
- Your abuser must be 18 years of age or older
An Order of Protection may contain the following:
- An order telling your abuser not to abuse, threaten, harass or have contact with you
- An order telling the abuser to leave and not return to your home
- An order awarding child custody
- An order telling your abuser not to sell, give away or other wise dispose of you property
IF YOUR ABUSER VIOLATES AN ORDER OF PROTECTION, YOU MUST CALL THE POLICE
